Why won’t my child listen to me?

    August 9, 2019

    Kaitlyn Harper, PLMHP

Getting your child to complete simple tasks at times can feel like an endless battle. Daily routines become a power struggle, feeling like you have tried everything to only experience temporary success. Sometimes it feels like giving up and “giving in” is easier so you can get out the door, because life doesn’t stop for tantrums. Those tantrums trigger doubts: Am I handling this right? How do I best help my child regain control of their emotions while I remain in control?

Life is busy and you’re tired. Tired of every meal time becoming an argument. Tired of battling every night at bed time. Tired of enduring a meltdown every time you use that triggering word “no”.  Parent-Child Interactive Therapy (PCIT) can help you gain the confidence to manage your child’s problematic behaviors, big or small.  Utilizing PCIT allows you to remain in control when necessary to form healthy boundaries with your child while increasing their ability to regulate their emotions appropriately.  I received training in IoWa-PCIT with additional training in assessment of attachment while working at Daybreak, a day treatment facility for children with moderate to severe problematic behaviors.

I have assisted parents in regaining confidence in their skills while improving children’s overall positive behaviors. I work to understand each family’s unique dynamic to modify these skills to work best for each parent-child relationship. I recognize each child does not fit the same mold and I adapt PCIT to provide the most successful, long lasting outcome.  Children respond to PCIT by displaying an increase in positive behaviors that parents wish to experience from their child. Naturally negative, attention-seeking behaviors decrease as well.  Tantrums and meltdowns become less frequent and shorter in duration as your child acquires skills to cope with their emotions.  Daily routines become easier as your relationship with your child continues to further build trusting, positive boundaries.

If you feel PCIT would be helpful for your family call me today at 402-325-0117 x11 to find learn more or schedule an appointment, or book an appointment online!
