I have worked with children, adolescents, and families for over twenty years in several different capacities. My experience has taught me that parents want to be heard and not judged. Children and adolescents want to be heard and understood by the adults in their lives. I offer the following to parents/guardians and their child: An unconditional positive regard for all members of the family seeking help. Together, and let me say that one more time, together, we will identify the problems and most importantly seek the solutions.
Many times a pattern of behavior becomes established for a child or adolescent at home, school, and in the community. Breaking the pattern of defiance, depression, anxiety, poor communication, trauma symptoms, etc… is a difficult task. Also know, that just like putting on weight over the years and then trying to lose years of weight gain takes time; so does therapy. Therapy is not a “quick fix”, and will take time to adjust negative behavior and thought patterns.
I utilize a number of therapeutic interventions based on the age and needs of the child/family. They are, but not limited to: Solution Focused Therapy, Person Centered Therapy, Collaborative Problem Solving, Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and Alternatives for Families-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT).
