Escaping Perfectionism

Shelby Henderson, PLMHP
Do you struggle with feeling as if life is too much to handle? Does it seem like you get one task done just to have 10 more tasks to complete? Life can be overwhelming with everything that you have to balance on a daily basis. Adding on the belief that everything has to be done perfectly in order to be good enough only perpetuates the amount of stress you feel every day. It can get to the point where you are afraid to fail so you decide not to take any risks. By avoiding aspects in life that you may not be able to complete perfectly allows you to avoid failure. When something in your day does not go as planned you stress about it for hours and leads you to feel completely out of control. That project you turned in that you spent weeks working on and cancelling plans with friends in order to get it just right received an A-, rather than an A, leads you into a downward spiral of thoughts on how you will never amount to anything. Constantly working harder than anyone else because you cannot trust that someone else will do it the way you believe it must be done leads to an overload of work on your part, as you refuse to accept any help.
You do not have to face this battle on your own. You have the chance to lean on me, as your counselor, to receive support and no longer feel anxious every day. You can change your mindset to truly believe that your best effort is all that you need. I have worked with others in your same position and together we had the ability to create a life full of meaning and happiness. Your stressful lifestyle caused by perfectionism can be managed so that you look forward to taking risks and be more accepting of who you are.
As a counselor, I am here to give you that support to help you discover what is truly meaningful in your life. When you have the ability to prioritize your life, only the aspects most important are left and can be managed more easily. By understanding what purpose the need to be perfect is providing you, we can work together to create more positive beliefs and actions that will lead to a more manageable and enjoyable life.
If you are ready to let go of that constant need to be perfect and to reduce the amount of stress in your life call me today at 402-325-0117 x13 to learn more or schedule an appointment, or book an appointment online!
